Our Philosophy
Without caring mentors, positive youth development just doesn’t happen. At First Tee, we take coaching seriously. We believe that a meaningful, quality relationship between coach and participant is vital to our program.
“Young people don’t care what a coach knows until they know a coach cares.”
SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY.
SafeSport is HERE and EVERYONE MUST DO IT.
As you consider volunteering for our chapter, know that the safety of our kids is our first priority. Please read our SafeSport Prevention Policies by clicking below to see how we conduct programs and activities at our chapter.
Before you can volunteer with us you will be required to complete the SafeSport online training and pass a background check. Details to complete the training and background check will be supplied by FTP once your interview is completed.

We’re Looking for You!
Nationwide, we currently have more than 3,700 coaches signed up with First Tee, including PGA and LPGA pros, as well as volunteers. But you don’t have to be a golf pro or even a good golfer. With First Tee Coach Program, we provide the training you need.
Developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development, our program focuses on empowering participants through decision-making and exploring options. This helps foster positive relationships between coaches and young people, inspiring the golfers of tomorrow to look to the future, set goals, and unlock their potential.
Why volunteer?
To promote an organization that impacts the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instills life-enhancing values and promotes healthy choices through the game of golf. The ideal volunteer candidate is enthusiastic, energetic and passionate about the work that they do for the benefit of the participants and the organization.
According to research, volunteers live longer, due to a culmination of benefits discussed in the National Council for Aging Care guide, How to Volunteer as a Senior. CLICK HERE for the guide.
When can I volunteer?
Most volunteering, especially Coaching, takes place in the evenings or on Saturdays. However, some opportunities can be during the day.
What types of volunteer opportunities do you offer?
Assistant Coach: Assist in our weekly golf clinics. All that we request is that you make a 7-week commitment (one day per week), for up to 2 hours each week. Each clinic is led by one of our trained staff members who creates a written lesson plan for our volunteers to follow.
Greeter / Check-in / Logistics: Registers participants, hands-out information to parents, greets visitors, provides general program information, and assists with bathroom breaks for participants during clinics.

Coach Taylor P., volunteers at Pleasant Ridge in McKees Rocks
“It was actually very satisfying to see the kids doing well and enjoying themselves.”
Coach Tom C., volunteers at The Bob
“It is a life affirming, mentoring process combined with the love of golf and the simple tasks of camaraderie, manners and successes we are faced with on a daily basis.”
Coach Abi C., volunteers at The Bob
“I call First Tee the “Little League of golf.” It teaches kids basic golf skills and core values that they can utilize for the rest of their lives. It is a wonderful introduction to the game of golf as well as the principles that can be used through life.”
Coach Rick R., volunteers at The Bob
“Great organization that promotes values, ethics, and hard work to the youth of our community and applies the lessons learned into the game of golf. A win/win.”
Coach Rick, volunteers at The Bob
“I retired from a 35 year career in 2013. At that time a friend of mine told me about a volunteer opportunity at First Tee – one because I was retired and two because I love golf. I volunteered as a coach for two seasons and learned how to teach the kids the fundamentals of golf as well as teaching them the nine core values which they can use throughout their life, even if they are no longer golfing. I think First Tee is a great program, but I felt I could be better utilized in another area. After a conversation with a staff member, she told me about other volunteer needs at First Tee. I am now doing some administrative volunteering in the office which I have really enjoyed. I call the First Tee office with my availability for the week and Alison lets me know which of those days I can be used in the office. The flexibility of this opportunity is also very attractive to me”.
Sue H., volunteers at The Bob
“Thursdays are going great, a nice group of kids.”
